How Using Artificial Intelligence Benefits International Students

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the way international students learn, adapt, and thrive in new academic environments. Outside of the ChatGPT app that we all know, there are tutoring AIs built to help students as they study for tests, do their homework, or even write a paper. In his Ted Talk How AI Could Save (Not Destroy) Education, Sal Khan, founder of Khan Academy, talks about how his company’s AI Khanmigo is every student’s dream tutor. The AI does not tell students the direct answers and it has a safeguard, alerting students that their conversation with the AI bot is “recorded and viewable” by their teacher.

The beauty of these types of tutoring AI’s is the fact that they provide efficient help to students at their disposal. The time a student has 1-on-1 with a teacher is valuable, but it is also limited. Utilizing ChatGPT as a tutor or downloading an AI tutoring app is a great way to foster an individualized learning environment on your own schedule.  

English Language Practice

AI can also help students practice their English. According to the U.S Department of Education’s article, Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Teaching and Learning, AI can adapt to a student’s skills, helping them in a way that makes sense to them. It is also adaptable to a student’s language proficiency as well. Students studying abroad in the U.S and Canada can use AI to have full conversations, ask for translations, and even ask it to explain phrases, words, and certain grammar principles. This also provides international students with the chance to learn languages other than English as well. As soon as you initiate a language with an AI bot, the bot will respond in that language.

Helping Students with College Search/Applications:

While in school, international students can have AI help them strategize their college search as well. Students can list what they are looking for in a university, provide a list of schools they are interested in researching, and the bot can give a list of those schools in order based on the criteria the student provided. This gives future applicants a baseline, giving them more time to work on other aspects of the college application process. You can even use an AI bot to give you examples of supplemental essays so that you can practice brainstorming for similar questions that may arise on college applications. Students can also use a bot to help alleviate interview stress by asking it to provide questions as if it were an admissions officer giving an interview. Overall, the flexibility of AI can help students prepare for various aspects of the college application and decision process.  

Helping Students with Adjustment to Life Abroad

International students looking to study in North America may find that AI can help them with their adjustment to life abroad. Something as simple as asking a chatbot about local landmarks or cultural traditions can make a new environment feel a little more familiar. They can even ask ChatGPT about specific customs and aspects of culture in North America so they can understand what it is like in their school’s region even before they arrive.  

AI gives students the opportunity to look at education and problem solving from a different angle. Companies are already using artificial intelligence to complete tasks such as reading applications, answering customer questions, managing inventory, and so much more. AI’s place in schools will build a child’s AI literacy skills, and it will also teach them how to think creatively both alongside and without artificial intelligence.
